To perform this study, Axelrod developed a variation of <A title="Prisoner's dilemma" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma">prisoner's dilemma</A> (PD), involving repeated PD interactions between two <I>players</I> (i.e., strategies written as computer programs) in a computerised tournament.
