I imagine that in St. Paul's day, circumcision resulted in a good many infections - some with pretty horrific results!

Masbury, if your imagination is right, then Jesus Christ himself must have suffered from "infections" with "pretty horrific results", as you suggested. All Christians know that their "lord" and "savior" was himself circumcised. Read the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 2. If one follows your "logic", one could wonder if that is why Jesus did not get married (according to the Christianity).
