AtlLiberal says: If your reaction to this clip is a blase "who cares" then the odds predict that you have a penis. It's remarkable that after centuries this outmoded way of thinking still holds sway. And what's even more remarkable is that women are sometimes responsible in not more forcefully opposing this outdated dogma. In the Bible Jesus had women disciples. Jesus talked with women the same as he talked to men. Women were not "created" to be subservient to men. Men and women were meant to help each other. Women are just as capable of spreading the word as a man. So, how do you explain the Catholic position and the position of such organizations as the Promise Keepers? Well Alt, the historical Jesus, the man that walked the face of the Earth, did one thing (among many) that was very profound and revolutionary in his day which was to have an attitude and behavior in his time and place toward women that was profoundly shocking. Not only did he travel with women, he also promoted their equality, which was a very dangerous practice in his time. I can only imagine that the historical Jesus must have been a terrible impressive male--strong, handsome, serious, self-confident, brilliant, and always respectful of women. Not only did he treat women with great respect and reverence, he did not talk down to them or keep them in their place--whatever that might be. ... So, how do you explain the Catholic positionAbout the same as I would explain GW and his "family values" @debbyski While I could argue the factual existence of Jesus the concepts you discuss are what I would imagine a lot people derive from reading the bible. But the bible's patriarchy can not be dismissed by what we think is appropriate today. That's the rub with interpretation. I share your views regarding equality as, I'm sure, do many, even if I come to them from a totally different perspective. About the same as I would explain GW and his "family values"Good answer. IMO, family values should extend to all people, not just white heterosexual American Christian Republicans. So, how do you explain the Catholic positionPeter, the "rock of the church." He was not known as being fond of Jesus' woman followers or the gender in general. When Jesus said, "get thee behind me, Satan," he was speaking to Peter. I think you're confusing male chauvinism with Christianity. I don't remember Jesus ever telling a woman to obey men at all costs and put up with their abuse. This is the same as confusing any religion with male chauvinism. Male chauvinism will only interpret what it wants from any religion in order to support its goals. I think you're confusing male chauvinism with Christianity. No, not really. I'm saying that Christianity is a patriarchal religion, along with the other Abrahamic religions. As such, they all place women in a secondary role. Of course, not all sects do so with the same degree as others. What I'm saying is that what Jesus taught and advocated is not the same thing as what Peter, aka the church, stood for. It has been my experience that more often than not its WOMEN who argue against equal treatment. My wife and I partook in an email chain where people could begin a topic and everyone in the chain could discuss it. One topic was allowing women in the military and it spread to other man/woman equality topics. The most vocal AGAINST allowing women equal footing in the military, business, management, politics, etc were WOMEN! Blew our minds. These ladies felt that a woman's place was in the kitchen and that the man was the family leader/provider. And so grow the fruits from centuries of social indoctrination and subjugation. These ladies felt that a woman's place was in the kitchen and that the man was the family leader/provider.Ahem! It's a problem when these women use these misguided beliefs to influence the raising of their own daughter or influence others as the to "proper" station of a woman. Litsen, just because you don't like their beliefs doesn't make them misguided. It's two different outlooks on life, so what?? And what is it with people complaining about parents teaching their children their values???!!! If you're a Christian, an Atheist, Amish, Muslim, Buddhist, or anything else, chances are your children will be too! I take it your a male chauvinistic pig then and want women in their place? If you're a Christian, an Atheist, Amish, Muslim, Buddhist, or anything else, chances are your children will be too!Which is a excellent example why any beliefs in a god are total hogwash. Thus those "moral values" that have gender limitations are hogwash as well. When you try and limit someone based on their gender then you are an idiot. There is simply no arguing that. It's wrong, its degrading, and its something that should not be accepted. Allowing people to continue such ridiculous cultural practices is irresponsible. You certainly wouldn't stand by and allow cannibalism in a modern society just because it was the beliefs of a family. As far as justification of misogyny is concerned perhaps it would be helpful if the argument were framed in a different way. Instead of Women must be kept at home and bearing children for the Church. Ordaining them as priests would give them dangerous authority."Let's rephrase that: Blacks must be kept at home and bearing children for the Church. Ordaining them as priests would give them dangerous authority."The problem is that if you posses a penis you are automatically granted privileges that are not granted to people with vaginas. We all admit that this is the case with such things as equal pay and advancement in the work force. How then, has religion la... |
