Another interesting article. When I was roaming Canada, I noticed that "catcalling" was a much more rare phenomenon than it is in the U.S.. This leads me to conclude that catcalling might be a cultural thing. What do you think?

seems like that would be a logical assumption.

From Canada – wish it was different here. Both my daughter & I have put up with too many catcalls too many times. This is not a compliment to women. I did notice that there are no catcalls when my spouse is with me (a big, intimidating-looking guy). And to the men who think they’re just complimenting women – why not use the same catcalls the next time an attractive man walks by? And if catcalling men are just looking for strokes from their buddies – just cut out the middle- er, um –woman and stroke each other! The worst thing is that there’s always the proverbial older catcaller who has 8 hairs wrapped around his bald head 5 times; has more tattoos than teeth, and has the audacity to comm...

My Canadian wandering days were a few decades ago and primarily in the west (Bc, AB, SK). Sorry (very) things have changed. Do you suppose it's due to an influx of U.S. culture?

Think it's more a Western culture thing - women are possesions....I think confident men don't feel the need to holler at women - my man sees young women as little girls - has a sense of protection for girls who have self-esteem problems due to men treating them like garbage....But, what do I know - I'm just a woman...

I think there would be a lot more cat calling in the US, but many construction companies have made requirements of their crews to behave. They have to remember that a lot more women are in positions that decide whether their company gets the job. Also, cat calling means they are not paying attention = injuries and lost time. Several years ago, I witnessed a painter who was busy cat calling at an attractive young woman. He fell off the scaffolding resulting in a broken arm. OSHA visited the site and shut it down for a couple of days.

Meow!! Speaking of cat-calling...
But seriously, I have seen car and motorcycle wrecks along with other potentially life-threatening accidents caused by some guy's need to make incredibly personal comments to a woman (or girl) that he doesn't know. It really bothers me when these remarks are made by adult men to obviously underaged girls. And just in case someone wishes to remark on the state of dress that teens supposedly adopt, the particular situations I have witnessed involved perfectly modest clothing. Also, the remarks are often cruel and derogatory. From what I've seen, the purpose of these remarks are to both embarrass the subject (by treating them like an object) along with a little...

Now that you mention it - the painter that fell was in his 30's and he was hooting a 16 year old. She worked part-time at my office. Her mom and I were at the property when he fell. Her mom had hired the painters so it was a true "learning experience" for the painting company.
