How serendipitous - the Nun Study was mentioned in the book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, by John Ratey, MD, which I just read. The autopsy of one of the nuns, Sister Bernadette, who was active and capable and sharp-witted until the day she died, found that her brain was absolutely riddled with Alzheimer's lesions. The pathologists rated it a 6, which is the highest score possible on the scale. Dr. Ratey thinks it's because Sister Bernadette stayed physically active all her life. The man who did all the research was live on Irish radio the other morning. He tells it so much better than the print. He stays with the nuns regularly and is accept entirely in their community. So a great story all round, IMO. Lexica-How serendipitous- What a great description of such a unselfish act. Thanks! |
