BobbyRutan says: Al-Qaeda, Powell asserted, was only 10% of the problem in Iraq and Nouri al-Maliki, its prime minister, lacked the political will to establish an effective government. After a promising start to the surge at the beginning of the year, 453 unidentified corpses were found on the streets of Baghdad last month, 41% more than the 321 bodies found in January, according to unofficial Iraqi health ministry statistics. It’s strange. If Powell was trying so hard to tell Bush the folly of a war with Iraq. Why did he have that press conference, on there being without a doubt WMDs were there. And it was imminent to pre empt a strike. He was also in the company of one George Tenet. The CIA director who also back slid on what he told the president. Is this just a bunch of puppets covering their ass? Or are the rats abandoning a sinking ship? Maybe Both. I know some Republican Representatives are jumping boat now. Aaaaaah yes election time sure can change some minds. The worst thing about Powell and all the other Vietnam era "never again" military-types now in charge is how, when it really mattered, they clicked their heels, saluted sharply, and then sold their young soldiers downriver. That's true. I just want to point out that Powell has never been as pure as given credit. As an officer in Vietnam, when made aware of claims of a massacre by US soldiers against Vietnamese civilians, he conducted a cursory investigation and filed his report. Powell reported back exactly what his superiors wanted to hear. "In direct refutation of this [Glen's] portrayal," Powell concluded, "is the fact that relations between Americal soldiers and the Vietnamese people are excellent."Powell's name also shows up in Casper Weinberger's notes regarding negotiations to acquire and sell, illegally, Italian Agosta Helicopters to Saddam Hussein in 1986. You know, the helicopters... Who is listening now? great comments folk. Politicians sleep in more beds than travelling salesmen and Powell is a classic. "Why did [Powell] have that press conference, on there being without a doubt WMDs were there. And it was imminent to pre empt a strike" They didn't claim a WMD strike was imminent. They said we had to strike BEFORE it became imminent. If it's was imminent it's too late. We've known all along that Powell didn't agree with the president -- he said as much at the time. He basically said (back then) that he made his argument, didn't convince them, and then did his job -- which is ultimately to do what his boss tells him to do. "which is ultimately to do what his boss tells him to do." That puts him at the same level of accountability as a fry cook. While I am not a great fan of Powell, I do think that at some basic level he was duped by Bushco. As a man true to his ideals he may be in the right church by being part of the GOP, but he sat in the wrong pew by finding his way into the influence of the Bush cabal. |
