I'm all for a woman's right to choose if she wants to end a pregnancy. But surprisingly, I'm with the Bush administration on protecting healthcare workers who wish not to be involved in abortions.

Just as a woman should have the right to choose (after consulting with the father of course), doctors and other healthcare professionals should be able to choose not to participate in procedures they are inherently against.

The REAL Napster
If Wal-Mart can make allowances for employees(cashiers) of the Muslim faith to not have to handle pork and other foods they consider unclean, then the above topic is not too far out of line. Makes perfect sense.

Personally, I find the concept of forcing a healthcare worker to perform a procedure on someone that they feel is wrong to be quite ludicrous. The last person in the world I would want performing an invasive procedure on me is someone that absolutely does not want to be doing it.

However, that right of discretion should also extend to the facility they are employed at, and these publicly funded facilities must be afforded the right to remove from their staff people that refuse to perform procedures the facility is there to provide.

I agree that a person should not be forced to perform any sort of procedure that goes against their belief. One thing that I do disagree with is that if a woman wants an abortion she can have one but, only "After" she talks to the babies father. When a man can do his share and physically himself carry the baby to term himself than fine, as it is it is the woman who is pregnant not the husband. The baby is in her body not his; therefore, her body, her choice.

Good perspective tanyamm, but as a man, I have to disagree. Completely agreed a woman does all of the work to carry and deliver the baby. Hopefully the father is there to support and help, but in some cases, it's just the woman.

That said, in many cases it takes a father to make the baby in the first place. Of course a woman could be artificially inseminated, but if she went through all that trouble to get pregnant, I imagine she wouldn't want an abortion.

Even though the woman carries the baby, the baby is half the father's and half the mothers - it wouldn't be there without the father's participation. I think if the father is around, he should completely have a say in the matter. Otherwi...

Great point cjartists. If healthcare workers have a right to choose not to participate, the healthcare facility should be able to select the people they need for their procedures. So for example, a clinic that does a lot of abortions (among other things) should be well within their right to not hire healthcare workers who won't participate in those procedures, as long as it would impact the facility.

So for example, if 80% of their procedures are abortions, it wouldn't make sense to hire a doctor who wouldn't perform them.

In terms of firing an existing doctor, I'd hope the facility would do everything they could to assign the doctor other procedures before coming to that.

Okay, I am pro-life and here is my take.

Federal dollars should NOT be going to support elective abortions. Not that no money could be given to a place that does elective abortions, but that they must show that it isn't going into that part of the business. I feel the same about other elective medical procedures such as plastic surgery, cosmetic dentistry, and even corrective eye surgery (which I really want).

On the other hand, I think doctors, even those opposed to abortion, should be willing to perform an abortion if a life is at risk. And if they aren't, then they should only be allowed to work when a doctor is there that is willing to perform such a procedure. I feel it would be just ...

I'm pro-choice but I don't think abortion should be used as a form of birth control either. I knew a girl years ago and by the time she was 19 she'd had three abortions. That to me is wrong. After the second abortion a woman should be sterilized. Harsh yes, but obviously she doesn't want children so why keep funding her "mistakes".
