_Bane_ says: A lot of good stuff in here detailing how Beijing is trying to go green in an attempt to improve air quality. Mostly pictures of a recent convention held in Beijing. Believe it or not, there is actually huge popular concern about the environment here in Beijing. Much more than in America. Unfortunately, the populous is often taken in by misinformation, spread by the government, companies, or simply urban legends. On the other hand, they are always bold and aggressive about trying out new ideas. This one is very very important. Not many people know it, but Beijing tap water is safe to drink from a pathogenic stand-point. It is deep ground water, not contaminated surface water. However, it tastes horrible and contains a frightening amount of minerals and even heavy metals. Why is this? Because they are practically sucking it out of the limestone bedrock.... @ouyangwulong Wow I had no idea it was such a huge problem for Beijing. Well this puts this porus pavement innovation in an a new light. Before I thought it was just very cool. Now I know that it is very cool and extremely necessary. Apparently (according to a series I saw on PBS), the city is also sinking as a result of the greatly reduced water table... It has sunk something like 30mm/year over the last decade or two... This sounds like a good idea. Here in Puerto Rico we are drowning (literally) in cement, which is bad considering this is a tropical island with a high percentage of rain/humidity and high heat indexes in the summer. |
