debbyski says: " No, if you take my line of thinking one step further, if you're not a patriot, what does that make you, besides a parasitic leech? Sorry if I'm running this rant aimed at you, Joe, but you were referred to in the debate because you're a modern archetype for right wing libertarian parasitic leeches-- and everything I'm saying about YOU is true for millions of other parasitic leeches who would let people die rather than support the universal health care that every other first world nation provides." You go girl! If I could POP more than once I would. You said it Debby, and you said well! As citizens, there's no doubt about our obligation toward taxes: pay them! That doesn't mean we have to love paying taxes, or volunteer to pay excessive taxes. But it does mean we should pay our fair share. After all, we don't live on a desert island. As members of a community, we share in the many benefits of that community--from both highways to police departments and schools. Too many American's want a free ride and guess what? Community just doesn't work that way. If we want to enjoy the blessings of living in this great country, we have to help pay for them. As Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes reminded us: Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society Another quote from Judge Learned Hand in a 1935 case, "Anyone may arrange his affairs so that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which best pays the treasury. There is not even a patriotic duty to increase one's taxes. Over and over again the Courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everyone does it, rich and poor alike and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands." I think what citizens of this country object to, is other citizens inferring just because one used the tax laws to one's advantage, that one should pay more, just because he can. ... pay more than the law allows. |
