Two closely watched economic reports delivered more bad news Thursday: New claims for unemployment insurance jumped, pushing the number of people on benefit rolls over 5 million, and orders to factories for durable goods plunged a bigger-than-expected 5.2% in January.
The government says orders for big-ticket goods expected to last at least 3 years plunged as global economic troubles cut into demand from customers both in the United States and abroad.
