blueridge says:
A CBS News report (correction: not Couric) stated this at the conclusion of a piece tonight (Sept. 23) based upon this study here which considers that people have a personality within their states, or flock together with those of similar. While the headline of the story underscores New York as neurotic, West Virginia scored highest.

Note the study describes a "stress belt":

The results revealed clear patterns of personalities - neuroticism is highest in the east along a line stretching from Maine to Louisiana - the "stress belt".
There is evidence of this in the crazy way people drive in West Virginia and the high auto insurance rates even though it is a small population center. (Ohio insurance rates are much cheaper for example).

West Virginia has been a place of conflict since it was formed, splitting Virginia in two. The "mountain state" has been a tumultuous region, "wild and wonderful", and still untamed.

See how other states score.

Hey, we gotta get home quick to watch our state flower; the satellite dish! That is worth taking hairpin turns at 75 miles per hour!

Are we stressed here? Well, ask Jesco White. I think he was hitchhiking once and had plans on stealing the car, but started a conversation with the girl in it, fell in love and married her instead! (This is a true story folks) And they lived happily ever after as long as she didn't serve him sloppy eggs for breakfast (stress, stress) Oh, BTW, I do think he is coming to a club I know and I want to see him perform. AND I would like to get an autograph a...

"neurotic"!! They are calling my home state neurotic? Maybe just not in step with the current trends of the US. Well.... I can only speak for my own relatives.

My aunt married at 15 and had 5 children. She was hardworking and greatly admired and loved, but died in an automobile accident (along with her oldest daughter). Driving in W.Va can be perilous!

Lots of NASCAR members too. Oh, and coal-miners. I don't think they will fit in with the Obama crowd.

And W.Va. voted to secede from Virginia because of the slavery issue. Had family members on both sides. I'm glad my family moved South but I love "those West Virginia hills....".

I hear ya Jatfla and you go girl! *LOL* Blueridge, Jatlfa and I bond on this issue, and she probably knows that I am just joking cause I'm allowed ya know!

But you are wrong about that Jatfla, the coal miners are bonding with Obama; at least the union coal miners.
The people I have spoken too that have the most prejudiced attitudes tend not to vote anyway, so I have to bear that in mind as a factor.

But let's talk about what we both love in WV and that is the sense of "family" and hard work. As Jatfla rightfully points out, we are a hard-working family oriented people. And at the end of the day, I know my friends and family may or may not agree with me, but they will always stick by me...

The way the geologic map looks, the 'neurotic' states follow along a general mountain range running at an angle NE to SW. It could well be that there is a mineral, or lack of a mineral (such as lithium) in the ground water. It's been shown that where there is an abundance of lithium (i.e. Nebraska) the population is more sanguine.I'm not a chemist nor geologist, I've just read a lot of fascinating essays about how the USA was "formed" over the eons in a book that came out around 2000, "Annals of the Former World". It's not beyond possibility that the old saying IS true " it's something in the water" !

CBS finally posted their video here, which has New York in the title. The West Virginia portion is at the very end of the video.
