For now, scientists are continuing to monitor sick bats.
But as every week brings a fresh discovery of White Nose Syndrome in yet another cave, and mortality rates continue to climb, their fear for all the bats in the Northeastern US is rising.
Their hope is that before next winter, when the bats return to caves and mines to hibernate, more will be known and the decline in bat numbers can be prevented.
