The doctor is still calling my mother at age 90, senile dementia--but to me it seems she's showing more signs of Alzheimers. It seems mild and she has been taking Aricept for 2 years, but it seems she is showing more symptoms all the time. I realize its progressive and so far she is still in independent living, but its worrisome all the same, even if it is only MCI (mild cognitative impairment).

I've seen the gradual creep of dementia in action as my father aged. The lesson I learned from it is that it is the responsibility of the family of the loved one to take aggressive action on their behalf and to speak out loudly when dealing with the medical community.

Satchamo...I will not minimize your pain as you watch your mother digress. I've been where you are and know that it's devastating to watch. At 90...that's amazing really. That she is still 'independent' is beyond amazing.

You can do many things to help...but the end is sure. Do all that you can and then rest....knowing that you gave your best to the care of your mother. I've dealt with this with my mother-in-law and my father. It's amazing that we always believe that none of this will happen to *us* or to those we love. Words fail to express the emotions that we go through. I'm so sorry.

I nursed my mother for 10 years prior to her death, and now my elderly father, whose hearing and cognitive abilities are diminishing daily. I find it so difficult sometimes to maintain my patience and have to remind myself that it's not his fault. But, glory, it's like looking after a giant wayward child. However, it's the very least I can do for a man who, having had me late in his life, cared for me enough to stick around and raise me. But it's not easy, and you have my prayers and sympathy Satchmo.

May God Bless all you folks for the care you give your parents. This must not be an easy time for you.
