You may add to Eco's list two markers identified by others. One is the rise of superstition in a broad sense (related to irrationalism and anti-intelectualism of course) as cultural, moral,political and spiritual points of reference are lost. The other is the numbing of sensitivity to suffering by routine quantitative references to atrocities; dehumanisation.
