n2sooners says:
In 1998, Bill Clinton and Al Gore were hardly popular among conservatives. Still, in the 1998 ANES survey, Messrs. Clinton and Gore both received a perfectly-respectable average temperature of 45 from those who called themselves extremely conservative. While 28% of the far right gave Clinton a temperature of zero, Gore got a zero from just 10%. The bottom line is that there is simply no comparison between the current hatred the extreme left has for Messrs. Bush and Cheney, and the hostility the extreme right had for Messrs. Clinton and Gore in the late 1990s.

Liberals are tolerant of other liberals. Try telling a leftie you oppose BOTH the death penalty AND abortion. On the other hand, watch the reaction you get when you say you are against any more gun laws, but think affirmative action is a good thing.

...neither the twain shall meet.

Oh yes, lets be tolerant of Cheney and Bush, why not, is not like they haven't done anything wrong, ever. So believing that the Preznit is not a "good guy" is intolerant?

Thats a novel idea.

Believing that no one in the world could possibly be worse than Bush or Cheney is pretty irrational. And that is how 60% of self confessed liberals feel. So it may not be that the left isn't tolerant, but that they simply aren't rational.

Well Cheney/Bush are in a very short list people that are worse (pedophiles and serial rapist/murders come to mind), inaccurate, maybe, irrational, not so much.

Tolerance of evil bastards like Bush/Cheney has let those two murderous, Constitution stripping bastards get away with war crimes and treason. In that case--zero tolerance should be observed.
The way those stats are set up is totally bogus anyway, but that's beside the point. Way to spin the truth, Too-soon!

Just to let you guys know, you can double-check Arthur Brooks' findings by going to this website: http://sda.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin32/hsda?harcsda+nes2004c

This the exact same survey that Arthur Brooks was using. If you replicate his results but look at years other than 2004 and 1998, it will be quite evident that Brooks is cherry-picking his statistics.

In 2004, Brooks uses the data to highlight extreme liberals' alleged intolerance. The average rating extreme libs gave President Bush was 15 (on a scale from 0 - 100), and the percent of extreme libs giving the president a rating of 0 was 60%.

Brooks asks us to compare these figures with the figures for extreme conservatives in 1998. The...

Also, just FYI, Brooks is misrepresenting the meaning of these thermometer ratings. Thermometer ratings are evaluations of politicians. That someone gives a politician a rating of 0 just means they are giving them a really bad evaluation. It does not necessarily mean that the rater thinks the politician is the worst human being to ever exist, or that the rater thinks that we ought to ban support for this politician. If you want to get at those kinds of sentiments, you need to ask different questions.

I could cherry pick my own statistics to make "my side" look good and the "other side" look bad. But what's the point? Using thermometer ratings to measure political intolerance, or ideo...

Finally, for those who want to replicate my analyses:

The variable for respondent ideology is vcf0803.
The variable for thermometer ratings of the President is vcf0428.
The data covers the years 1948 to 2004, so you should select only a few years. In "selection filter" I typed "vcf0004(1994-2004)" which selects the years 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004.
You should also input the year variable (vcf0004) as a control, so the results will break down by year.
Brooks did not use sample weights, so for the "Weight" option select "No weight".

JK gets on these obfuscatory, defensive, and maturbatory rants whenever his pardigm is challenged. Brooks' findings have been thouroughly scrutinized and backed by other data.

For example, here.

The fact is self-reliant, libertarian Conservatives are the weight of most of the Charity provided in this Country and the World. I am certain this fact is obvious in each person's individual circles.

This is all fine. The Left make up for their lack of giving in their clamorings that others should.

Willhelm, it is nice to see you, and your friend the ecological fallacy, back on Clipmarks.

If you (or anyone else) need any help replicating Brooks' analysis on the SDA website let me know.
