jussyRider says: Just an aside, Harvard is one of few non- accredited schools. Teach superstition in the schools. Yeah, great Chuck. Good thinking. Why not as long as it's in a philosophy class and people have a choice in the matter it seems like a good bit of learning to me. The most Ironic thing about prayer in school is that it was orginaly taken out by a guy who spoke on a christian radio talk show. A very non-fundamentalist I doubt that anything like the church taking over the class room will happen so long that we can keep a clear and open mind about this issue It depends on the context in which they're teaching about the Bible. If you're studying it as the central document of a religion that has had an enormous influence on Western history, fine. Also, the King James Bible is worthy of study as a work of literature as the first occurrence of free verse in the English language. And that's not even getting into the fact that a lot of medieval literature invokes the Bible and religious themes. Now, if they want to use the Bible to proselytize, that's when we start getting into First Amendment issues. How advantageous would it be if just the book of Proverbs was taught to our children? Pro 4:24 Don't let your mouth speak dishonestly, and don't let your lips talk deviously. Pro 22:24 Don't make friends with an angry man, and don't be a companion of a hot-tempered man, Pro 22:25 or you will learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare. Pro 17:25 A foolish son is grief to his father and bitterness to the one who bore him. (Just as examples) I agree, the Bible should be studied for its enormous influence in history, literature and the arts. To probe and study as we do any literary piece, and it should not be limited just the Bible of course all important text (holy or otherwise) should be studied in this way. Now if you want gospel, thats what Sunday school is all about. Many of those examples like Pro 22:25 are wrong I hang out with a lot of angry people and most people say its hard to get me angry. It dosn't take much intellegent to refute things like that. I submit that the point of the proverb is that we learn from those whom we associate with. Whether it's an angry spirit, a nasty mouth, an indifference to violence, promiscuity, whatever..... The opposite is often true also. That being said, if you "hang out" with such people, be aware and alert. You are probably young and still impressionable. |
