Here we call them food banks. Here in New Westminster the food bank is open 2 days a week. I've noticed that there are still long line ups at closing time. I used to volunteer there and we would over the 2 days put through over a 1000 registered users and every day more and more new registers. There was 1 register per family so each register represented anywhere from a single person to couples to families of up to eight. So every week the actual total of people fed was literally in the thousands. You had to live here to get food and every area had there own. It go so that at times we had over-flow because other banks ran out of food. That was 2 years ago and the need has increased. It used to be Social Services could not direct people to food banks. Now they have to. There's not enough money to give them all vouchers and they have to eat. |
