As American and Russian military powers in South East Asia are reduced, now China has the sole sea-force power in this region. They want to take control these islands, to get the oil from that area. More important, reaching Spratlys allows China to control all sea routes from the West to the East, from the North to the South, because those islands are close to the Strait of Malacca (the main ship passageway between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean).
