mickfinn says: Anyone interested in forming an informal art club on CM? No great aims. Post a picture. Ask others what they think about it - what they see. Tell them what you think about it - what you see. We all try to broaden our minds on many subjects; this is just another. I am game. Tks I'm game. Tks That is nice. (though last time I said I was game a mighty female hunter tried to shoot me Occurs to me that the Degas picture is a precursor to verite phorealism, and how there are interesting connections between a cotton exchange and a newspaper office: information commodities internet threads webs etc. Sorry for posting twice. Had a problem with the first post and repeated it. Well, In my humble non-artsy opinion, I see business as usual, an attitude of indifference, capitalism, and a bunch of white guys along with snow white cotton which was provided by black labor. I'm sure it captured the attitude of the times. I like your idea Mickfinn...count me in Looks like a regular day at a cotton office of some sort...i totally dig that dude standing by the window...reminds me of myself last time I said I was game a mighty female hunter tried to shoot meWhat, for saying you didn't like her picture? 'The Cotton Exchange at New Orleans' was painted in 1973 by Degas whilst staying in New Orleans. You may be lounging around Deepti but, apart from the man in the foreground just about to blow his nose, and the man sitting behind checking his stocks, the others look pretty busy! Abailart is right about the realism and photographic quality of the painting. The comment - cotton exchange…>… newspaper…>…information…>…communication - is an interesting one. Yay! I think a CM art club would be very educational, at least for me. Thanks for starting this up, Mickfinn. @mickfinn: I was in the jungle when this giant woman, naked except for a rifle over her shoulder fluttered her eyes at me and asked if i was game... Boom! Boom! @bnm: The more the merrier ! @abailart: HeHe. (Is that why you screamed 'get me out of here'?) It's a great idea. I wish CM would allow us to form groups that allow for this sort of thing easier. Finding like minded people. I think it's great to share thing with everyone but not everyone cares about the sort of things that I clip and it would be nice to have people who are have easier access to it. @wurdzgurl. This is a good idea. I also learned about "factors" in England and Scotland by following the links in the articles main page. The wonders of the internet. Love it. "the man in the foreground just about to blow his nose" - mickfinn? After enlarging the picture as much as I could, and getting out my magnifying glass, it looked to me like he was inspecting the cotton he was holding in his left hand for quality and density by pulling apart the fibers with is right hand. Coming from the southern U.S. I have seen this type of "inspecting" in educational TV shows and in other photos relating to the cotton trade. Thanks for the art club suggestion ... sounds great to me too. mickfinn, if you have the time why not get the club going by creating a clipcast with a suitable title? This could include sharing of links to interesting sites and forums. Bottom up is the way. Bottoms up and tally ho! That is a great idea, abailart. @Marcariel: "the man in the foreground just about to blow his nose"Sorry about that, it's my sense of humour. I did guess that he was doing something to do with cotton, why else be in the picture. Glad you like the idea of an art club. Seems to be quite a popular idea. @abailart: I may well need technical assistance with your suggestion. I'm quite new to this caper and not too sure what your idea is. Willing to learn though, as ever. (Given up riding incidentally, too saddle sore). @mickfinn. With not too much difficulty i created a CLIPCAST on cuttlefish (go to my page to see it). If you could do the same and give it an appropriate title, we could chat away on individual entries, share ideas and links etc. When you put up a clip it goes by default onto a general list, but once you have created a discrete clipcast by clicking on the make a new clipcast button on the clipcast (as opposed to classic) view, you get the option to put each clip into a specific clipcast. I don't know, but with the facebook etc facility, we would then have broader possibilities to have a clipper's special interest group. Maybe some of the bright whizzkids of technology could advise us further... I'm definitely up for this, mick. Though I am quite technically inept so could do with some pointers as to how I would access the latest debate...! I like the clipcast idea. Or if that's tricky we could just link to clips. How about a look at a late Monet. @Everyone: Well, gone for broke and created a ClipCast on my page entitled: ClipMart - Art to ShareHope it all works to our mutual enjoyment. I love your idea mickfinn. Art is one of my favorite subjects. Unfortunately, I'm not a very good clipper, but I sure do know how to POP. I hope it works, too. It should be fun. Here is the link to the Clipcast. Thanks Mickfinn. Oh, good news, I think! I'm still stuck on the classic view but will figure out how clipcast works. Thanks Mick. PS/ I've just seen a bigger picture with a better resolution of the Cotton Exchange by Degas on Art Renewal. Perhaps you'd be interested. I was trying to see what the seated man in the foreground was holding. It's a piece of cotton. Now, Mick, what is it about this picture that moved you to clip it? I must confess I love Degas but the subject matter in this picture leaves me utterly unmoved. Like Bignosemousie (I think) said that she has an emotional reaction to art. That would be me too. However, I'm ready, willing and able to see it through another's eyes, thus expanding my own vision. ClipMart is great. Go visit! @Michelle. My remark about him blowing his nose was just my sense of humour. I found the picture by chance but do think it is interesting. abailart is quite right about the 'photo-realism' quality. It's a busy picture: lots of people, a bustling environment and much activity. Except for the man blowing his nose, that is I'm soooo slow. :} I wonder if I can be the official beach bikini clad women poster? |
