More news about a more fair and rational approach to marijuana, yesterday in the Rolling Stone, at:
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/28600327/a_drug_war_truce/1

QUOTE: The [OBAMA] administration has announced that it will no longer bust clinics that legally dispense medical marijuana, and incoming drug czar Gil Kerlikowske declared flatly in May that he had "ended the War on Drugs." endquote.

Recently, New York State — a state with some of the harshest drug laws (i.e. 20-years for possession of a few joints) — has repealed its repressive Rockefeller drug laws.

Well said citizenbfk.
Do you have this info readily available:
How long has pot been around? When and why was it criminalized? What percentage of Americans have or are using it? What are the total $$ spent annually on the weed? What are the financial costs of enforcing (HAH!) the law and incarcerating "criminals" who use it? Does the medical use acceptance lead directly to legalization in say 40 years? Approximately what amount of money has been spent in the last 50 years to prevent and prosecute its use?
Does all of this add up to be another travesty on the magnitude of WAR? Who wins and who loses?

No.

Offhand, though, I heard it's first mention in hisotry comes from ancient Chinese medical text.(It appears to be most frequently recommended in ancient medicine as good for menstrual cramps and poor appetite).

Some varieties of the plant were considered great for making strong ropes and for boat sails.

Why it was made illegal probably has many political suspicions: as a mean of hassling Mexican immigrantion in the 1930's? -- as a way of getting a bigger budget and more power for the Federal police force (the FBI)?

Maybe society always likes to have a scapegoat?

This group, at: http://www.drugpolicy.org/homepage.cfm seems to have solid info and reasonable ideas.

Then it became some moral issue fueled by the more righteous than thou sector.
