VentureBeat just ran a story stating that Forbes has acquired Clipmarks. I wanted to quickly fill everyone in on what's going on.

First, this article is a bit premature. We have not been acquired by Forbes. However, for the past few months we have been meeting with people at all levels of Forbes and the excitement and support they have shown for what we're creating has been very meaningful to us. As many of you have probably seen already, a number of their writers are already clipping and our technology has been integrated on forbes.com.

For quite a while, we have been in talks with various parties about helping to financially support clipmarks. However, we hadn't yet found the right "partner" to help us complete this journey. A partner who fully understands our vision for making news and information more portable and interactive than ever before. Therefore, we just kept looking.

In Forbes, we feel that we have an experienced, highly enthusiastic and hungry team of people who understand and appreciate why clipmarks is special. I believe they will be very helpful to us in fulfilling our potential.

That said, we're still working to make this happen. In the coming weeks i hope/expect to have a more definitive announcement about our relationship.

Good luck, Eric. At the very least, it sure seems like Forbes enjoys Clipmarks and that is great exposure.

Oh wow, Congrats. Its funny, just as I was reading this I received an email from Adam Collett who sent me a PERSONAL email giving me heads up about the news. Now that is a community! Forbes is so lucky (and so smart) to have you guys. You all deserve it. You are the best community out there, hook line and sinker. And you might make my wishes come true because I've secretly wanted to see you guys take over the world, muah ha, ha.

Thanks everyone. The congrats will go to all of us. The key is that clipmarks will continue on, well supported by people who very much believe in what we are all doing. It is all of us who have made clipmarks what it is, and it is all of us (and many others hopefully) who will take it into the future.

Julia, we may not take over the world, but we're definitely committed to changing it. Awareness and knowledge are imperative to mankind...we're totally committed to enabling information to spread to all people so that our collective level of awareness and knowledge can increase substantially.

Interesting...just saw this pass by my browser. This looks like it could be a really great match up. With the exposure to the mainstream that Forbes could bring to Clipmarks, you guys might need to buy some more servers!

I figure this is the best place for Eric to see my message since I'm sure he would tell me "Pffft....email is so 1999."

Maybe clipmarks taught Forbes something they didn't know. Facts can stay the same, but the way people relate changes with time, and technology. The effect works both ways, Technology changes the way people behave, and vice versa. The web is still a work in progress. Clipmarks is an example of the way the changes in the way people relate also affect both their knowledge and their understanding of current issues and topical subjects. A lot of bookmark sites seem like they are terminal to terminal, while clipmarks people seem to act on a more personal level. You can't buy that. It relies on the fact that we recognize that there are things which vast numbers of people, sometimes all, have in com...

Have you considered holding out a little longer to rouse even more interest, press and higher offers (ie. what's happened to Facebook after Zuckerberg turned down $1 billion)?

Clipmarks is worth a lot now because of the incredible community it has built since launching but imagine the result of this exponential growth after a few more months.

Just a thought. In any event, I am a huge fan of Forbes and Clipmarks so much much continued success to you and this potential deal.

To the Clipmarks folks:

I wrote the story for VentureBeat, and I'm sorry if it was a bit premature -- we're generally sensitive on these things, but thought we had a hot tip. Congratulations, in any case.

You can also reach me at ereldon@gmail.com.

Best,
Eric

Good question Amanda. The key thing about this is that we're not "selling out." This is 100% about enabling Clipmarks to grow. We think that clipmarks is poised to have a huge, positive impact on people's online experience. In order to reach our potential, however, we need help. That means financial help, guidance, support, etc. That is what this deal is about. So while i totally hear what you're saying, this is in no way the end of this journey for us. Rather, i think it's going to provide us the fuel to continue it. As for the exponential growth you predict...i totally agree. And wait until you see what we've got coming in September

Well it's good to hear that Clipmarks will finally get the financial backing they need to move on and do things right (Hopefully a C++ programmer or 2 as well). It takes money to make money and this is no exception. The actual giveaway to the whole deal was Facebook. One does not integrate with a multi million user site without serious infrstructure upgrades.
Nice job, take a bow.

Congratulations, Clipmarks, (the best community)

To the Highest Bidder!!!

sidegik was just reading today an old article in businessweek magazine (august 2006) about the forbes family:

"FORBES INC.'S SALE of an undisclosed minority stake to Elevation Partners ends a long odyssey for the Forbes family and gets them exactly what they have wanted for years: a minority investor, a nine-figure sum, and the retention of family control. Earlier this decade, the Forbeses sought around $250 million for about a quarter of the company, says one executive familiar with that attempt, which came ...

Hooray! Congratulations

I'm sure the Clip Fathers will find the right people to help make our community better, if it isn't already the best for us. They know what they want to happen and I'm sure they're doing their best to find the 'right way' to get us there.

The actual giveaway to the whole deal was Facebook. One does not integrate with a multi million user site without serious infrstructure upgrades.
Hehe The reason why I joined Facebook: I've been thinking about this for a while now. My closest friends aren't even there but Clipmarks is enough to get me to register. <3

Being a recent clipper, I have thouroughly enjoyed the site, it is so easy to use, especially if your new to computors, unlike alot of other sites. I wish you luck and prosperity.
One comment about facebook, do clippers want a site where people can set up pages for unsavoury items, hope clipmarks wont follow this sort of venture

Whoa, just seeing this now. Congratulations guys. Let's hope the "feel" of the site and of the community don't change. What I'd hate to see is having the front page get too cleaned up and corporate looking. But I trust that the guts of the project -- the community behind it, and the founders' emphasis on community and on sharing -- are going to remain central no matter what. I really hope you guys get a decent payday out of this. You've put a huge amount of work into it and anyone who uses the site can see how thoughtfully it's been designed and crafted. Clipmarks is literally the one webpage I look at daily -- can't say that about Twitter or Google Reader or Netvibes.

I was in a gardening business for just about 5 years before I formed a partnership with 2 other fellows of like mind & spirit & at the time I only had 17 accounts. Within 3 years we had over 300 accounts, employing 10 employees & were mentioned in Dunn & Bradstreet & I'll never forget the excitement, joy & good feelings of those growing times. I wish those for all of you at Clipmarks, you've worked hard for it. As I see it when one succeeds we all succeed & when one fails we all fail so here's to us all growing in global consciousness & a better world, a better tomorrow.

Wow! Cool news, I was wondering how long it would take before you guys got picked up. Kind of surprised that it was Forbes though (nothing against Forbes, just wasn't expecting them to be the ones).

If/When you do finalize, what will it mean for Clipmarks? (Both as a company & as a product?)

Congratulations! Any venture which enables the Clipmark community to grow gets my support. Clipmarks is, in my opinion, the best exchange of information there is. People can share/exchange information without the need to set up personal pages that many times contain 'unsavory items' as vampy2 said. Stay on this road and I think Clipmarks will continue to succeed.

Hey guys, this is great news over all. You have worked very hard at creating this most excellent and enjoyable community on the Web. My one selfish concern is that with such tremendous growth we most likely will lose the intimacy I have always felt here when communicating with our various participants and members. I actually feel as if I am a member of a special club of interesting, diversified people. Now, with Forbes taking the helm, that entire ambiance might change and we will find ourselves in a totally overwhelming and "cold" corporate milieu. But as I said, that is just my selfish thoughts. I wish you all the very best of luck, and I sincerely hope we can all remain as close and real as we are now.

clipmarks is an idea for the times we are in. Indeed it is been very useful. I haven't seen your vision doc (not checked out) but it may be a good idea to send all in the community what is it.
We do deals and so my (unsolicited!) advice is look for the right partner first and then the right price.

MUNTUNGU
i agree clipmarks is about having the right partner then the right price and not any other way. clipmarks is the the true meaning of what it means to have the internet bridging the knowledge gap in a world of the "ideas" and "means", "rich and poor" , "local amd remote", "common and abvious". lets see who else wants to jump on or hold down the revolutionary effect of clipmark.

keep it guys we are with you

This is an incredibly energizing story/thread. Seems like the whole world is accessible on a laptop these days, except of course for some of my favorite places like the Marshall Islands.

It's just a matter of time....and money.

May the rains sweep gentle across your fields,
May the sun warm the land,
May every good seed you have planted bear fruit,
And late summer find you standing in fields of plenty.
