According to climate models, global warming will lead to a drying in the Southwest U.S. leading to a permanent “Dust Bowl” state. This process has likely already started.

"within a time frame of years to decades."
This is something which is very disquieting. Any rational hope at behavior modification of mans' use of current technology which MIGHT help alleviate this issue seems to take place in a much longer time frame. I'd much rather we be going in debt up to our grand-children's eyeballs to try to affect conditions such as these than throwing our cash down the rat-holes of wars on each other and the bogey-man of drugs. Think what could be if the (best Carl Sagan voice here) BILLIONS AND BILLIONS of dollars spent on those boondoggles were spent in a manner consistent with trying to save our ecology. We fight a war on the ecology each and eve...

Unfortunately this is typical of human history. The ruling elite will perpetuate a system that has favored them and will do so at increasing cost until something fails. So far, for the U.S., the political system has been able to adapt to the forces of change (minus the civil war that is).

We may well yet be able to buy our way out of the regional "dust bowl" problem. We should of course see it as a warning shot across the bow of the coming ecological crisis (of which global warming is just a component). But will we?
