The month's highlight is the famous Perseid meteor shower, occurring this year under ideal new Moon conditions. It will peak on the night of the 11th-12th, with the intensity increasing after midnight to about one meteor per minute. Two nights later, Neptune comes into opposition in Capricornus, where it remains a dim, 8th-magnitude object requiring a telescope to see. Venus finally vanishes into the setting Sun's glare and is at inferior conjunction on the 18th.
