abailart says: The gentle, artistic boy who played the cello and bass guitar was long gone. "At 15 Daniel was being bullied at school and then started to have strange thoughts, anxiety and sleep problems. A doctor prescribed him a powerful drug called Stelazine and that was the start of a nightmare which eventually led to his death. He had bad physical reactions to the medication straight away but every symptom was seen as more evidence of schizophrenia and treated with more medication. Alternative treatments were never an option; keeping him calm was the priority. "Daniel was really passive and never complained but my mum was convinced the medication was going to kill him. She changed GPs many times, went private, bought vitamins and demanded blood tests; getting better care for Daniel became her full-time occupation but she was accused of interfering. In the months before his death, Daniel suffered from three major epileptic fits brought on by drinking too much water. Why was he so thirsty? I When will we ever learn... It is never that simple. The anniversary of my 23 yr old brother's death by suicide is a week from today. He was untreated and refused treatment. One of younger brothers just told me that one of the first few times my brother attempted suicide, the paramedics had to duct tape him to the stretcher to get him down the overly steep staircase (it was almost a ladder) of our family home. It was a vivid reminder of the horrible decisions people affected by mental illness often have to make. We need better options and more humane care to signal even the slightest concern fr the lives of the mentally ill. Even without meds many of the listless behaviors described above were characteristic of my b... Sorry for the shock headline, which is to bring attention to a theme of World Mental Health Day. I know it is not a simple issue, know it very well. Yet the point the article makes bears investigation, which is that some people on medication for mental illness have their physical health needs overlooked. I have close contact with several people on neuroleptics for schizophrenia, and I witness that their primary care needs, including screening and advice, are not attended to well routinely. Smoking, kidney trouble, obesity and diabetes in particular, are not in a simple relation with medication but the relation between medication and health care does, in my experience hold true. I also work ... I personally think glucose processing malfunctions are linked to many mental disorders.I agree! Would be great to see you clip/share some stuff on this, I am very interested. I am very sorry to hear about your brother. My condolences. I am going to a memorial tomorrow for an acquaintance of mine who killed himself last month after suddenly going OFF his medication. So many sad stories............ at least it looks like it was brand name Stelazine. Most "medicine" I'm generic form in the US is questionable: one is wildly lucky if it works at all. The "free medicine for the elderly" line one always hears? That is usually, for those at the level of subject in this UK based story, would mean a lot of chalk, some poison and some bitter salts over same to hide the crime. Hitler was doing this type of thing in the 1920s before he even "got to" the Jews. Lest anyone think I exaggerate, they might want to google "generic medicine psychosis.". The number of class action suits tried and won have been relatively few because by the time avsevere schizophrenic knows that his or her Neurontin gener... I think this may happen far too often, someone taking meds and their health going downhill as a result. The other issue can stem from someone no longer wanting to take their meds and the withdrawal symptoms becoming far too much for one to handle. The answer may lie in finding alternatives to medications and handling the situation through a proper diet and exercise. Far too often are medications prescribed where a simple change here and there would suffice. Coming off of meds should never be done alone and needs to be handled by professionals. |
