Even without meds many of the listless behaviors described above were characteristic of my brother's final years. He could not seem to stay away from soda pop and junk food. Again, this is without meds. I personally think glucose processing malfunctions are linked to many mental disorders.

Yet the point the article makes bears investigation, which is that some people on medication for mental illness have their physical health needs overlooked. I have close contact with several people on neuroleptics for schizophrenia, and I witness that their primary care needs, including screening and advice, are not attended to well routinely. Smoking, kidney trouble, obesity and diabetes in particular, are not in a simple relation with medication but the relation between medication and health care does, in my experience hold true. I also work with a mental health consortium and hear the same claim made repeatedly by service users. But I most certainly am NOT dismissing the role of medication in management and treatment.
