I just finished this one. It's the third of his books that I've read, along with "Misquoting Jesus" and "God's Problem".

This guy must live in a vacuum. There is more evidence of the Bible, it's teachings, and it's history than any other ancient manuscript. It sounds like he has a vendetta to disprove the Bible. Those who are gullible will listen to him.

Have you read anything the man has to say? He's spent his entire life devoted to a close study of the bible, and what he found led him away from it spiritually. On a scholarly level, he's still more of an expert on it than I'll ever be on anything.

You mean he can't be wrong while millions and millions of Christians through out the ages "closely studied" and believe what the Bible teaches? I guess we have all been wrong and this guy is now enlightening us.

Have millions of Christians have closely studied the Bible, cross referencing the historical, archeological and literary traditions of the last 2,500 years?

Popularity does not breed accuracy.

Furthermore, many documents have not been available to scholars. The Dead Sea Scrolls weren't published until 1991, and a lot of apocrypha (for jay8h, the apocrypha are writings that did not make it into "official" versions of the bible) have been kept under wraps so they wouldn't undermine the rest of the books.

"Millions and millions" of Christians really don't have more than a fuzzy idea of what's in their scriptures, much less closely studied them. The rank and file seldom go beyond what they hear from the pulpit; even degreed ministers aren't able to read the manuscripts in their original languages and scripts. "Millions and millions of Christians throughout the ages" believed that ...

@iquanyin, feel free to but your ten cents in. It probably won't have any effect on jay8h, though.

Studying the bible for what it teaches and studying it for truth and accuracy are entirely different endeavors.

You can glean some moral teaching from just about any literary fiction you pull off the shelf. But it doesn't change the fact that it's fiction.
