This is a personal note... This semester, I was up for tenure at the small Pennsylvania college where I work. I was just informed a few days ago that my tenure bid was approved. This clip says a little bit about what that means.

Be careful though, I wouldn't want your brethren turning on you for saying the J word in class, even your tenure may not save you then.

It means not having to weigh the potential repercussions -- at least,
not quite so much -- of speaking your mind in a committee meeting.

This makes me feel very sad.

You should have been comfortable speaking your mind at any stage of your career.

It is this fear that kills our society, stifles our growth as a people, an organization, an individual.

I hope that you do well in the future. (my partner will be climbing
that tenuous tenure ladder soon). And I hope you don't become one of
the brain dead dinosaurs that frightened you on the way up the academic climb.

We need as many teachers as we can get.
Working hard to get tenure means you deserve security. Rather than just teaching from a textbook, the journey becomes part of the lesson.

I am truly happy for you.I remember my Social Psychology teacher 30 years later and how it still affects my world view.May your students think of you fondly 30 years hence.
