Actually, I do not wholly agree that dyslexia is purely a disability. For whatever reason, very early on, I developed coping skills much like the ones that everyone uses to read the clip above.

This has given me what I feel are two distinct advantages when it comes to learning foreign languages:

1. I find it easier to recognize trans-lingual cognates, by identifying relevant letters and phonemes. It isn't easy to confuse me by spelling a word incorrectly or differently, because it goes into my head as a jumble anyway.

2. I find it easier to understand foreign grammar, because when I read, my understanding of the sentence is not so heavily based on word-order, since that comes to me as gar...

2. I find it easier to understand foreign grammar, because when I read, my understanding of the sentence is not so heavily based on word-order, since that comes to me as garbled as well. Instead, I take the raw materials of each sentence (the words) examine the relationships between them, and construct the meaning from there.

This means that for me, reading in a language I don't even speak, yet is related to one that I do, becomes much easier, even though reading English can be slow for me. Of course the downside of this is that certain spelling-intensive languages (Such as Attic Greek, with its nearly infinite permutations of declensions and conjugations) require a phenomenal amount of additional concentration.

I hope people think of this before the too readily dismiss Dyslexia as simply a tragic disability. The way that we may succeed at learning is very complex, and not completely understood.
