For the last couple of months, Senator Rumson has suggested that being president of this country was to a certain extent about character. And although I'm not willing to engage in his attacks on me, I've been here three years and three days, and I can tell you without hesitation, being president of this country is entirely about character.

America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You've gotta want it bad, cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say 'You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, and who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at...

We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things, and two things only : Making you afraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle age, middle class, middle income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family and American values and character and you wave an old photo of the president's girlfriend and you scream about patriotism. You tell them she's to blame for their lot in life. And you go ...

This was sounding really good, and I was about to pop it, until the guns issue came up. I support the ACLU and I agree, in a country that truly free you have to allow that freedom to extend to those you personally disagree with. But guns are not in the same boat with defending the Bill of Rights. In fact, if push came to shove guns could be necessary to defend the Bill of Rights. Right now, in our country, I fear that last sentence might get me on some kind of government list. That's not the country I grew up in. Seeing what the police are doing and the erosion of rights that's happening in the U.S. all I can say is, I miss the country I grew up in.

I understand. I think he was referring to the assault rifle ban, not handguns, although the way it was articulated sounded good. He would talk to Americans and make his case, that is the way is supposed to be done. Gun control does not mean banning guns, at least it should not be.

May I remind you on the numbers: See Micheal Moore's Movie. Canada has more guns per person- Handguns are out- as are assault weapons. Nobody is trying to stop the hunter from hunting, but not with assault rifles and automatic guns. Look at the arsenal of guns and the easy way you get the license to get one or two or more. Defending your rights with guns in this age? Never!!! The military firepower available to police and national guard will out-kill you more than 1:1000. No chance to defend anything with guns as boniface would like to think. Sounds romantic but it is a total farce my friend. Romantic, if you think that today's change will come by the barrel of guns blazing. Russia got rid ...

Yeah the real problem is the gun culture. Also klippety, you raise a point that I made several times. If you rely (in the US) on the 2nd Amendment to protect your freedom, it is too late. You already lost all your rights.
