This reminds me of the Kundt's Tube (sic) I came across as a young Physics student. You rubbed its protruding bit, and it howled, and some sand in the longer glass tube then arranged itself into waveforms correlating with the vibratory excitement induced by the rubbing.

wildcat, I'm not! I only did it for 'A' Level (examination for senior high school students). But am still interested, tomorrow going to a day of university lectures on astrophysics (for the layperson!)
