katsteevns says: I don't believe it. Geez, I sure do. It's simply a jab at dissent if you ask me. I am sure Professor So and So got a hearty slap on the back for that one. Dissent? WTH. Here is my rule of thumb regarding bumper stickers. 1 bumper sticker - borderline narcissism 2 bumper stickers - full fledged narcissism 3 bumper stickers - Doesn't give a crap about what anyone else thinks. 4 bumper stickers - one job loss away from a terrorist act. I should clarify that by 'bumper sticker' above, I mean political statement bumper stickers. Interesting rule of thumb. But since "constructive" dissenting voices are pretty much off limits in the mainstream media, people find other outlets, one being bumper stickers. The fact that the study associates rage with people who display political bumper stickers might have something to do with there being few outlets for alternative commentary and debate. And anyone displaying an Obama or McCain for President sticker would have to qualify under your rules, of course. A flag on the antenna would also qualify under your rules if you want to get down to the brass tacks. Is a support our troops ribbon not a "political" bumper sticker? Yes, but one that adheres to the status quo, so its "OK" Is a support our troops ribbon not a "political" bumper sticker? As a general rule, I put nothing on my car. I used to put a University plate on the front but I don't even do that anymore. I would not say a 'support our troops' ribbon is NOT a "political" bumper sticker. My comment was concerning the idiotic "bumper sticker" sloganeering, Like: "Bush lied, people died".....That kind of nonthinking, reaction based lunacy. I'm not saying there aren't these types of bumper stickers used by right wingers, but support our troops ribbons aren't it. Are you saying those on the mainstream left, decent democrats, do not support our troops? "Bush lied, people died"This does need to be drilled into us whether you think so or not. 1 million dead Iraqis and the 4 million displaced would agree. The slogan "support our troops" says nothing. It is too ambiguous. Support them how? By keeping them supplied with ammo until the next millennium? ------------- So, you are saying that the "dissenting view" is from the mainstream Left? I think you are mistaken. The mainstream Left is just that, mainstream, protector of the status quo. These are not the true Left who are banned from TV and presidential debates. Kucinich comes to mind. Nader and others who are treated as freaks and work for the common man instead of corporate royalty. Back to the topic, I can say from my personal experience that the Post article reaches an incorrect conclusion. |
