egoldstein says: Ok, i'm honestly posting this clip to try to make a point. Anderson previously posted this clip which contained the entire article this clip came from. http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/8D628B21-E43C-4C31-82A1-0CFA956B98D7/ I've written a bunch lately about my thinking that clips need to be a certain size ("clip-size") in order to make the site effective for everyone. Curious what you all think. Anderson, no disrespect meant at all. I think your clips are very interesting. Just honestly looking to get feedback from people about an issue i see being critical to clipmarks' future. egoldstein said:The only problem with Andersons clip, in my opinion, is the inclusion of advertisements and site structure; which result in a screwed up lay-out of the clip. Otherwise I have no problem with the size of the clip/article Djiezes, there are 2 problems i see with the size of it: 1) Legal/moral issues: i don't feel comfortable displaying entire articles from other publishers in the public area of clipmarks. 2) The experience for everyone on the site: My hope is that by aggregating clip-size portions of information that people post about all sorts of topics, all site visitors will be able to learn about more things than they can on othe sites that solely present either entire articles or links to them. I'm thinking that we should have a "small clips day" as an experiment just to see what kind of effect it has on the site if everyone makes an effort for a day to create smaller clips. I just feel ver... Goes to show there IS an art to clipping damn right haraya!!! here's an idea i'm playing with. to be pop-able, a clip has to be less than x characters. that way, people can clip, comment and collect any size clipmarks, but to be pop-able it must be a clip-size portion of info. now you know what will be on my mind this weekend Interesting. I'm actually foreseeing other possible areas of "study". Hahahaha! For instance, after your theory on pop-able clip-sizing has been outlined, you can proceed to determining other factors that affect a clip's pop-ability. This may include the time of day an article has been clipped, tags used for the clip, title of the clip (is it a comment on the clip or a description of what's in the clip?), etc. Hmm, I'm also wondering how the idea of clip-sizing would apply to pictures.. all good points and questions haraya. sure seems that i have a lot to think about I understand your concerns. The first one - legal issues / possible copyright infringement - may be quite valid. There has been some discussion on this topic. The source URL is indeed provided so plagiarism is ruled out; but it might still be seen as violation of fair use if an entire article/webpage is being clipped. The second issue you point out might even be more important. The Clipmarks philosophy (or here) is greatly helped by 'clip-size' and 'clip-... I meant to give this URL when I mentioned the Clipmarks philosophy: After reading Eric's remarks I was going to make precisely the point Djiezes made in his first comment. I've posted methods and linked to bookmarklets and little tools that really help in making nice clean clips numerous times. I don't know if a single person has tried them; no response as yet. I think the consternation over legal, and especially moral, elements are overwrought, and I suspect more an expression of the aggregate of recent web buzz and fret about it, than concerns that came to you independently Eric, am I right? I say relax on this, at least for a bit, and see how things play out. I think that if you begin placing the restrictions that you're considerin... |
