How refreshing to read this story. A decent couple with good values, I wish them well.

Very nice and warm and fuzzy and all that, unless you are the poor bugger who's kept from getting the job he's taking which you might really need.

BartendingBear, I totally agree. If he likes McDs so much, why not open a franchise instead of taking a job that some needs much more than he does?

I disagree. Luke Pittard may have neither the inclination nor the wherewithal to be in business himself, has made his choice and is happy with what he is doing. In this particular case, I would suggest also that staff turnover at McD’s is possibly such that it makes not a jot of difference whether he works there or not. He is also probably contributing to society in general by paying taxes on the interest he earns on his investments.

By the same token: In four years time I will reach official retirement age, but have no plans at the moment even considering giving up work. Must I give up a job I love because they may be someone out there who may want it; I think not.

@mcfinn - For me, it's a question of need, not want. There are people in need of work, and it seems irresponsible for a multi-millionaire to accept a paycheck for a job he doesn't need. McDs high-turnover rate is a non-issue. The fact is that he fills a position that someone not as fortunate as he can really use.

I applaud his work ethic, but I question his choice. And so you know, I am wealthy and I would never do what he is doing. I suggest that Luke PIttard lacks the imagination and the initiative to move on.

In my reply, I did suggest that, albeit in other words:
may have neither the inclination nor the wherewithal to be in business . . .
Perhaps after 45+ years at work (I started at 15) I am too hidebound and glued to the work ethic, but thanks for your thoughts.
