We are such a young immature species.

By who or what standard are we young and immature?

The universe. Our civilization is what, a couple thousand years old? Our technology is maybe 1000 years old if that. Most of our technological break-thrus have happened in the last 200 years.
At what level will we know our environment in 100,000 or 500,000 years?
In the last 500 years how many times have we revised our theories on what we KNEW was true?
We are not even close to figuring it out.
To think otherwise is a delusion.

But by that standard we will always be young and immature. It is a self limiting standard. Sure, we should always keep a perspective of ourselves, but self denigration really does little more than limit aspirations.

Can you explain what you meant with your original comment? I think I missed how it applied to the clip. (not being snarky, just unsure if it went over my head or not).

The clip caused me to think of what we are seeing in technological and science breakthrus. It caused me to wonder about our peception of advancement and where we will be in 100 years or so.
Immature was not a derrogatory slur against us but an observation of how little we know. I could have stated ignorant but too many people associate that with stupidity. Immature as in not fully mature.
I tend to view intelligence from the perspective of the cosmic calendar. Since we are the universe it could be said that we have just awakened. If we are not the only intelligent species in the universe it stands to reason that there are species that are thousands or even millions of our years ahead of us....

I don't think it is a self-limiting standard. I think it is an honest appraisal of our situation. I don't think that it stagnates discovery but fuels a recheck of our sources occassionally. Perhaps the reason there is still no Grand Unified Theory is because we got something wrong with the stuff we think we know.
