GATE is een van de eerste initiatieven van het Center for Advanced Gaming and Simulation (AGS) van de Universiteit Utrecht, TNO en de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Gaming gaat niet alleen over computergames. Er bestaat een grote markt van gaming- en simulatietoepassingen in relevante maatschappelijke en economische sectoren als gezondheidszorg, onderwijs, mobiliteit, veiligheid en openbare dienstverlening.
