As well as providing basic biological needs, food - its consumption, marketing, production - is an autonomous sign system, a cultural matrix. The way an individual or a culture relates to food, its valorised 'grammar', is one of the key markers of the undisguised core values of an individual/culture. One's own or collective attitude to food
is a political activity, be it it one of resistance or aquiesence.
