I just saw this moving documentary about young prostitutes struggling to leave the life behind. It reminds us that for all the preoccupation over human rights abuses in foreign lands, there are plenty to be found right in our own back yard. It doesn't seem to be having a wide release, but I highly recommend seeing it at a festival or on DVD.

David Schisgall has traveled to some of the most violent places on Earth, but it was the exploitation of child prostitutes he discovered near his home in Manhattan that shocked him more than anything he’d seen in war zones.

“I’ve been to Palestine, to Iraq, the drug wars in Colombia, and I’ve never seen such trauma and such hope as I saw here in New York with these girls,” he said.

The documentary tells the stories of girls as young as 13 abducted or coerced into a life of prostitution on street corners just blocks away from tony New York addresses such as Lexington Avenue or Times Square. The entry point into this world for filmmakers, said Schisgall, was Rachel Lloyd, the British-born founder of Girls Education and Mentoring Services or GEMS, a foundation created to rescue, mentor and educate girls in the commercial sex trade.
