Insurance companies' profits are the easiest place to cut costs. They bring nothing to the health care process. Competition from a non-profit public option is the best way to drive down health care costs nationwide. Obama is on the right track, and the main people opposing this are those who make the most money from our misery. Sad, but true. I've lived in Italy, Germany and Switzerland and for what I have seen, a public option doen't add anything to the process either:you exchange insurance company bureaucracy with government bureaucracy. An individual mandate for catastrophic insurance and tax deductibility for individual rather than corporate health insurance coverage would work much better IMHO: people care much more about costs when they have transparent pricing and you cut off an opaque layer of waste, the intersection betweem union, corporate and insurance bureaucracies. |
