Hmm, I found a site the other day honoring the 9/11 victims that suggests the number of victims is 2,996. I wonder where they got that wrong number? Even the Wikipedia entry has

Total
2,973 died and another 24 remain listed as missing.

Which still doesn't add up to 2996. And really, in this case, why make the distinction between missing and died? My mother is among 5 that are "missing" any identifable remains from the Pentagon. But I am not making any distinction, since she won't ever be found.

Is this "ironic" or just deeply, horribly wrong?
