Like America, we had out War of Independence followed by a bloody Civil War on the issue of independence. This was also in common with many other states that gained independence.

We didn't gain full independence until 1948 when we took it without a shot being fired. We did lose 6 of our 9 counties of Ulster, our northern providence. Hopefully some day our "four green fields" will be reunited peacefully.

By Bush&Co's definition all our leaders would have been terrorists like Nelson Mandela, just like your own revered insurrectionists/freedom fighters/terrorists/founding fathers. Our longest serving PM and president de Valera would have been executed along with the 1916 Rising leaders only he was born in America.

I've posted this bloody episode of our history as I don't want to be a hypocrite being critical of Israel and the CIA on the issue of assassination when we did it too.

No female, child nor innocent civilian died at the hand of an Irish assassin. Those opposite in uniform were not so choosy about their targets. Indeed terrorising the populous was a large part of the Black & Tans strategy. Our use of targeted assassination was tightly directed for a short period only.

After Saddam ceased to be of use to the CIA and was judged a liability in need of replacement, why then didn't the US utilise an assassin? The ...

Subsequently he was both Chairman of the Provisional Government and Commander-in-chief of the National Army. He was shot and kille...

I never was very proud of being British, we are responsible for so many of todays problems, from India and Pakistan to the African countries and the Middle East and after reading Bernadette Devlin's book on Ireland and Leon Uris's (I think it was him) book which title I don't remember right now I felt worse.

The Brits have always been so proud of their empire and remain proud today as if the UK was still as important globally as it was then, when in actual fact all the UK is now is a follower of US policies, which are just as bad as the British in the past.

I sure hope Ireland gets united one day in the future without shedding more blood or suffering.

The Leon Uris book was "Trinity" not a non fiction book but based on fact and well documented and an excellent way to learn about the history of Ireland.

I agree with the broad trend of opinions expressed here, and being half-Irish (the important half-my mother's side) have a great deal of sympathy with the cause of Irish freedom. However De Valera was no hero, or any good for Eire. The man was a bloody fascist, responsible, at least partially for the division of the island of Ireland, murdered of Michael Collins and a reactionary counter-revolutionary. If only Collins had survived!

Frank Aiken and a Sinn Fein gang were involved in the murder of Protestant civilians in Nth Ireland. There were civilians murdered North and South.
