The apartment I have in Copenhagen, lies in a car-free town. You have to park your car in designated areas and within the (small) town, only pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed. Four story apartment buildings surround the whole town and within it's borders, kids can play in safety. It's been that way for 20+ years or more. .

There's the perpetually great weather, enlightened inhabitants, and a halfway decent, if in my opinion overpriced, public transit system in the form of BART. "I want to live a lifestyle that's less dependent on cars," says Sherman Lewis, a retired poli-sci professor at Cal State East Bay and president of the Hayward Area Planning Association since 1978.
