ofcapri says: For one tomato seed packet you pay $1.99 and you get 20 seeds, to grow 20 plants. From those plants you could harvest up to $150 worth of tomatoes, and that's just the beginning. We didn't really do it b/c of money but my wife and I have a veggie garden this year. It was her idea (she is a bit of a plant nut) but so far its been very nice to come home after work and tend the garden and unwind. Doesn't really take too much effort for a small one (20' x 6') after the initial tilling and planting. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has a little extra space. You don't even really need a yard, container veggies do quite well if you tend to them properly, of course that route does cost a little more for the containers and the soil. so what should i call my garden? financial crisis garden? we ain't got no mo money garden? all the big wigs line their pockets garden? Make ends meet garden? Oh I got it. Hard times garden...... thats the one. so what should i call my garden?Better than eating dirt! or Recession Botanicals! If only bacon grew on a plant. I'm hoping my patio garden will do better this year. MMMmmmmm.... Bacon plant... drool...... In our area of Southeast MO., people can't find seed potatoes--the demand is so great and the stores can't get enough shipped in. So far seed packets seem to be available, but when the tomato and pepper plants come in, I'm wondering if they'll sell out in one day. I never did bother with carrots or potatoes, since they are so cheap, I used to grow the red leaf lettuce, tomatoes kai-choi, bok-choi, etc. I'd "harvest" the outer leaves of the lettuce and cabbage, the plants would last the whole season. Just saw this in my morning email. Looks like a nice way to container garden. http://www.instructables.com/id/Building-your-own-Earth-Box/ You can bet sooner or later the Gestapo will get around to taxing all gardens and items harvested for the betterment of the state. If it appears the citenzenary are not sending the proper amount of taxes to Heir Geithner, they will just increase the tax on seed like they did on tobacco. Obama' next appointment - a Garden Czar! - to pry the last penny from the people's starving hands so commrades in DC (Dear Comrade) will be able to 'distribute' it. burndata0-Thanks for your comment and the link! I'm big time into tomatoes and radishes.Lately with the way I smoke,I have been considering tobacco too. @swampfoxz- I don't believe that I paid $7.15 for a pack of Pall Mall non filter cigaretts the other day, but I did!!! I too am thinking of growing my own tobacco, if you know what I mean.??? Growing your own Tobacco, government tax usurper! You got that right! Rock On you usurper's!!!! I can really get behind a tobacco garden. How much land would I need? @dl211-Here in New Hampshire they have what they call a view tax. They tax you on the view you have from your property if you have a exceptional view. What next???? wow - a view tax, never heard of that one before Think I'll call my garden "SURVIVAL GARDEN" @ bignosemousie - I ordered some tobacco seeds this afternoon. Read some articles about growing it and thought I'd give it a try. Seems some people even grow tobacco to use as ornamental plants because of their leaves and flowers. Do not know if they will grow here or how well but I'll see. Not much space required for a few plants. This looks like a good site for someone getting into tobacco growing for personal use. watch out for the horn worms http://www.members.shaw.ca/tmcgrego2/grow_your_own_tobacco.htm dl211, please let me know how it turns out for you. The plants look lovely, with nice fat leaves. burndata0, that link is really helpful, thanks. cool! I just emailed them with a few questions. I'm very questionable (insert smiley thing here) I think I'm gonna do it! Cigs just reached 6 bucks a pack here in GA. thats bullshit! BULLSHIT I TELL YA! For about two and ahalf yrs I have been ordering bulk tobacco out of NY, along with cartons of cigarette tubes. I bought a rolling machine and have been rolling my own since. However Obama & Congress approved an almost $24 hike in taxes per pound making a $15 per pound bag now cost (as of April 1st) around $40. Close as I could figure, it was costing me around $5.00 - $6.00 per carton which was great, but now that's history. I have ordered enough tobacco to last me for over a year and am interested in growing my own. At least until the Gestapo in DC make it illegal or tax it so high it would be unprofitable to do so. Pretty much like what they are doing to every damn thing in th... @dl211- good luck on growing your crop! dl211 how do you store the tobacco to keep it fresh for a year? Good question - haven't gotten to that point yet. If it grows, I can hang it up until it cures. I will have to purchase a grinder (the one I saw was around $200) to grind it so it can be used for cigarettes, then put it into large baggies to retain some moisture content. I have to do more reading up on it, but first I just want to see if it will actually grow big enough to harvest. The seeds are so small, the ones I got are just specks. Just got a tray of seeds ready this afternoon, hopefully in 2-3 wks they will germinate. |
