Not surprisingly, the threat of punishment made people act more fairly. In the “punishment threat condition” people split the money close to equally. However, when Person B had no recourse, the people given the money acted very differently and gave away, on average, less than 10 percent of the money.

When the researchers looked at the brain activity of people playing this simple game, they found a consistent pattern. One region in the frontal lobes, the orbitofrontal cortex, seemed to be responsible for evaluating the potential for punishment. In other words, it figured out whether or not violating the social norm would get us in trouble. A second brain region, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, was responsible for inhibiting the natural tendency to keep most of the money (this would be the greedy thing to do) if this action might lead to future punishment. Interestingly, these brain areas only were activated when the threat of punishment came from a real person, and not a compute

the brain is just a tool of the mind which is part of the universal mind, If one person questions the accepted status quo it begins a transformation
just look at how the environment has taken centre stage recently, previously the domain of hippies
and how everyones using the net these days
previously the domain of geeks
also social norms are subject to change
just part of evolution

Without our brain we'd either be an inert shape doing nothing or acting like the lowest life forms eating to survive.

Every sense in the human body, every emotion and everything that basically includes the inputs of the human body all come together at the brain where it is processed. The result of this entire process and including this entire process is what forms the higher being or soul. Gestalt theory of the whole is equal to more than the sum of its parts is true in more ways than we can fathom.

Le Doux refers to 'quick and dirty' thinking which is a sort of default position, from evolutionarily prepared biological response to the complexity of navigating modern social life, the latter requiring 'chunking' into relatively limited 'automatic'
limited responses so that we don't have to work out everything from scratch. (And for most of our social life we are unconscious of the responses being made).Habits are part of 'quick and dirty' response. The degree to which circumstances allow pause for thought, reflective thinking can over-ride default response. In the case of higher process thinking evaluation of risk-reward-punishment and feelings of guilt are important; at the lower level,...
