I gave a homeless man and his dog a bag of groceries and some dog food, and he looked at me like I was the biggest asshole on the planet. Any theories why? I would propose that he was mentally ill and paranoid about something. There used to be the PDSA and RSPCA clinics held every so often for those who can't afford vet bills for emergency treatments, don't they have these anymore? Owning a pet is a responsibility. If one cannot afford the expenses of having a pet, one should not have a pet.Agreed 100%.. It does no one any good spreading the misery around. Shouldn’t they be able to experience the joy, love and companionship that a pet provides?Animal shelters ad sanctuaries need all the help they can get. If one wants to experience the love and joy animals can give, I suggest they go volunteer at some non-profit animal welfare organisation and help out. It will be of benefit to both them, and the animals. Do NOT get a pet, if you can't take care of it. Many shelters offer fostering of animals too. I myself have fostered many kittens. The expense is covered by the shelters and you get all the fun and joy *for free* and the animals receive all the help and health care they need. Poverty also restricts people from neutering and spaying their pets, creating even more homeless pets. PLEASE don't get a pet, if you cannot care for it responsibly. I think poor people should have pets, altough if the pet does get ill or injured and they cant afford the treatment, then they shouldnt keep the pet in pain. They should have to give the pet to someone or somewhere where it can be helped and treatment paid for. Any owner that loves their pet must know its for the best, and if they dont love their pet than they shouldnt have had one. There are people who believe that poor people should just eat 'feces' and die; sort of like that Scrooge comment stating that, "...they (poor people) had better do it (die), and decrease the surplus population." Most poor people find their pets in Wal- Mart parking lot give-aways or find "drop-offs" (animals unwanted by their original owners) in their neighborhoods and adopt them. Many poor people often sacrifice their own needs in order to feed and care for their pets. They do this for love and without regret, and their critters know it. Personally speaking, as one of those ignorant poor people, I see caretaking animals as part of my job on this earth and most of the ones I have are unwante... Many poor people often sacrifice their own needs in order to feed and care for their pets.Indeed. My pets' needs come before my own, any day. Being poor is not necessarily a hindrance to being a good pet owner. Being irresponsible is, though. Not caring for the pets one has, or taking in more than one can care for, is completely irresponsible, regardless of one's income. In many civilized countries, starving an animal or not giving it vet attention when it needs it, is in fact a criminal offense. Claiming poverty, is not an acceptable defense in a court of law, at least not where I live and thank heaven's for that. It is the owner's duty and responsibility to assure that the... What about people that go poor and already have pets? Should they be given up? Should we give up our families too? Clipmarks has become a society of bigotry and hatred. What a shame. Has everyone forgotten the meaning of COMPASSION? Yes, even poor people need the love of a pet. Pets are not people - but poor people are. Regarding skwirlinator's comments - my present income is about a quarter of what it was ten years ago. Through all this, my cats have never lacked for their basic needs. While they've gone without their annual shots in many of those lean years, I have often placed their medical care ahead of my own as a financial priority and their illnesses were seen to. I'm reminded of an interview with Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, in which she advocated the banning of pet ownership. She said that we should just enjoy animals in nature, at a distance. My reaction was to paraphrase Charleton Heston: "They'll take my cat from me when they pry him from my cold, dead hands." Jorjor - No worries - Your cat would probably fight off anyone trying to take him from you! Reimers - I think dmegivern was right - he was probably terrified but I'm sure the kindness reached his heart - and I bet his dog was happy! Skwirlinator - Don't lose hope. None of the posts on this clip were negative. It looks like everyone was looking out for the best interests of the pets. I just came across this article and thought it might be of interest. There's info at the source about where and when etc: PETCO Offers Pet Owners Relief in Tough Economy with Low-Cost Vaccination Clinics Poor people should not have pets because they cannot take care of them. Many of them do not know the proper way to take care of a pet, especially dogs. Tying them to trees, no water, no food, leaving them out doors and other appalling things. I get sick of seeing it. They get a pet and neglect it, the way they neglect themselves and their children. Leave the poor animals out of it. Yes, let's go around and take away all the poor peoples' pets. While we're at it, let's confiscate their children, too, since they can't take care of them either. We can either sell them to the wealthy, or follow this suggestion. Then, when the poor finally end their miserable existance, instead of taking up valuable burial space that is needed to inter the deserving. Those bodies can be processed into valuable fertilizer or feed for swine or other farm animals. Yes, let's go around and take away all the poor peoples' pets.
