When Germany collapsed in chaos then of course all such defenses ceased, and typhus and other diseases became rampant in the camps...Hence the horrible scenes, which however had nothing to do with "extermination" or any deliberate policy.

Now as to the probable motive behind the detention and deportation program, the historic 1933 newspaper headlines of "Judea Declares War on Germany" reveals the likely motive, since the "international Jews" made a direct, public threat against Germany to disable it economically at least, which provoked contempt to even an "enemy" status by one political party at least. (This was done to Japanese even without such grounds in the U.S. during WWII, for example). Holocaust teachings omit this provocation.

As to motive of Holocaust propaganda, one can conjecture easily:
1. to justify US involvement against Germany in WWII, something Americans resisted before Pearl Harbor, which cost heavily. To justify allied war crimes, the bombing of Dresden.
2. to justify the re-creating of the state of Israel, which has caused the Middle East to be in constant war and upheaval. Ahmadinejad of Iran talks openly about this motive.

Over the entrance to each camp was placed a sign, "Arbeit Machs du Frei," or, "Work Makes You Free".

Jewish leaders actually cooperated with the Nazis to separate the Jews, into the labor camps, so the German non-Jew population could be left the subjects of fire-bombing in the cities, consistent with their declaration of war on Germany, as Allies served their cause:
