Once The great English Mathematician Hardy and Ramanujan got into a taxi which number was 1729. Hardy happened to say that the number 1729 seemed like a dull one, and Ramanujan said, "No, it's a very interesting number. It's the smallest number that can be expressed as a sum of two cubes in two different ways". 1³ + 12³ = 9³+ 10³ = 1729 This was one of Hardy's favorite stories about Ramanujan, whom he regarded as a surprise prodigy from India. Thanks for the comment. He certainly was a remarkable young man. Below is reproduced that part of the article referring to 1729: ''Ramanujan was recovering from his first bout of serious illness in a nursing home in Putney and Hardy had gone there by taxi to visit him. Hardy (never much of a conversationalist) greeted the sick man abruptly with the words: "The number of the taxi-cab that brought me here was 1729. It seemed to me rather a dull number." To which Ramanujan replied without hesitation: "Not at all, Hardy! It is a very interesting number. It is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways." 1... eration to generation. Shakuntala Devi -- born on November 4, 1939 in Bangalore, India. |
