egoldstein says: interesting editorial by Tom Friedman of the NY Times. Particularly interesting to me is the discussion about India and China being so focused on engineering that they are not teaching people to be creative, out of the box, thinkers. I have no choice but to try to be an innovative, out of the box, thinker because i stink at science, engineering, calculus, etc!! via www.nytimes.com Me too - too much math Great article. Well in a way science can be creative too, when it's linked to philosophy and culture. Engineers are not science researchers though. There is a long storied history of conflic between engineers and scientists. Well, actually the other day my physics teacher just said to me firmly "You have to stop reading about philosophy and quit drawing as well."which should give you a hard painful confirmation that IT IS DULL. that is sad! I agree too. While I was in India too much emphasis was on Math and Science but in US, I feel there's too less. But I really like how one can take a high school or college course but still feel there should be even more choice. |
