When the torture issue is mentioned, the main retort concerns the gaining of information being worth the damage. Does anyone know if the garnered information has been of any value. One can only assume that lots of terrorist acts have been prevented by information gained through the torture. Or the option is that it has been no information.

If they'd extracted worth while info don't you think thry'd have told us. After all they eventually told us of the methods.

Torture is not for the purpose of finding out info. Both parties know this so any worthwhile info is volunteered early. The purpose is to dehumanise the opponent. Hardly 10-20% of those tortured were genuine terrorists. Yet they are still held. Why? Because they can. Holding the innocents is a deterrent to the terrorists!?

They are still taking in innocent males and retaining them in Iraq. Those innocent will become terrorists just for revenge as is the Arab way. Worse is that the torturers become the dehumanised!

of course; every country that's used torture can tell you that it works for its purpose, which is to get people to say what you want them to say, which has nothing to do with getting them to tell you the truth. i can't believe that in america in 2008 this is going on. the founding fathers needn't have bothered.

i think most people are genetically inhibited against violence against the helpless; certainly in most species it's genetically built-in. there's something really wrong with people who can do it. and there's something even worse wrong with people who use those people.

papananook, good point - can you remember how, over and over, Bush would be on the TV flatly insisting "The United States of America does not torture!"

And he was in on it the whole time.
