blueridge says: It's self destructive behavior that can have serious consequences, in this case death. I agree that getting piercings can be dangerous but isn't self destructive behavior. It's called body modification. Just because you don't understand it that doesn't mean it's a negative thing. Kate would never do anything remotely self destructive, she had great friends and family. Can be? Is. The dangers are present in every instance, irrefutably. Call it what you wish, a pig is a pig is a pig. This time of thing is not done for even personal adornment (e.g ear rings) but done to "prove something" to others, a form of self affliction, called masochism. If Kate could be interviewed now there is no doubt she would not repeat this procedure if she could do it over again. To risk serious infection, or death, to pierce a tongue is nothing but stupid. The only other serious effects from tongue piercings (that were reported) was breathing complications and one case which they tried to blame a suicide on the pain inflicted from the piercing (atypical trigeminal neuralgia) which was proven false. Infections do happen (althought not common) but can easily be prevented by keeping it clean with the instructions that are given to you by the piercer with every tongue piercing. I recently met her co-worker who went with her and got her tongue pierced the same day and she had no problems with her piercing. She also mentioned that it could have been due to the fact that Kate drank beer a few days after. Which is highly discouraged. Tongue peircing... You have proved my point, by your own testimony, that you had the painful procedure done "for the rush". It is self affliction, the affliction of pain on one's self. Here is the definition of masochism, a "disorder": masochism: psychosexual disorder in which erotic release is achieved through having pain inflicted on oneself -- Encyclopedia Britannica Well the procedure isn't really that painful at all. It might have been the least painful I have had. It's just the excitement before that give you the rush. Not the actual pain. I dont think anyone enjoys that part. There was no erotic release involved. It's just a similar rush you get when you first get on a rollercoaster and it begins to roll up to the very top of the hill. Maybe just more of excitement. I don't know if that helped at all. It might be one of those things that you'd just have to expirience. What happened to Kate should be a warning that doctors say is overlooked: Complications of body piercing include local and systemic infections, poor cosmesis, and foreign body rejection. Swelling and tooth fracture are common problems after tongue piercing. Minor infections, allergic contact dermatitis, keloid formation, and traumatic tearing may occur after piercing of the earlobe. "High" ear piercing through the ear cartilage is associated with more serious infections and disfigurement.Much more here for this high-risk behavior. It would be unwise to consider possible consequences medically before following the increasing crowd (which actually reduces individuality), and... Breathing complications? Sounds really appealing to me. Seems that a bit more insight might be in order... A new study published in the March Journal of Periodontology ...tongue piercing may cause other complications such as tongue swelling,American Academy of Periodontology There is more information out there if you look for it. That comment was about the serious side effects. Not just the more common ones. Chipped teeth and gum recession never killed anybody. And it's not about whether it will make you more/or less unique. But if you say that it's becoming more mainstream and we are all following the crowd is that implying that all of us have a psychosexual disorder? It's just about altering your body. Piercings are only the beggining of the extent of what you can change about your body. I guess they're will always be older conservative people who don't approve. You won't get it. There's no point of trying to explain it to you. Most of you are so ignorant. It makes me sick of how stubborn you are. Your opinion is your opinion however that clip was talking about Kate’s death and you guys turned it into she’s a bad person because she got a piercing. I have been friends with Kate since we were young she was a great person. Too bad this was her first piercing other than her ears. You guys who are "adults" need to grow up and open your eyes or at least stop living in the past. Kate has wanted her tong pierced for a long time its not like she was fallowing as some of you are claiming a “trend”. She wasn’t having it pierced for anyone else but herself. You guys aren’t even focusing on the main point Kate passing away… you... I am very sorry that you lost your friend. I mean you no disrespect or added pain with the comments I made. Note that I passed no direct judgment about her personally. However, I don't think it unreasonable to point out the known complications of the choice she made that other readers might be aware of them. I do think it somewhat unreasonable, and very rude, that you create an account to spew at us as to what and how we should think as your first action on the site. I understand as well though that you have the passion of youth in your sails and are acting emotionally. Great. Use that passion for the betterment of all, not just your ill-placed anger at your loss. Don't shoot the messenger. You just proved my point about ignorance. Stop acting like a psychiatrist & diagnosing me. I am not angered by her death I am saddened. I am appalled by all the remarks that have been made. You obviously missed the fact that it WASN'T PROVEN that she got it from the tong piercing. I made this account to prove a point not to take my “anger” out on anyone. You and others on this website are making judgments when in fact you don’t know all of the details. If Kate was here she probably WOULD still have gotten it pierced. This was a very rare case if it was contracted by this and it stinks it had to be her. Millions of people have their tongs pierce and how many has this happened to? Not many… ot... My heart goes out to Kate's family and friends. This is really tragic news. While body piercings can provide a passageway into the body for infection to develop -- even as seriously and lethaly as the mouth piercing, I don't see that as a direct correlation to bodily destruction -- this human process/need is present within all of us at various portals of the living experience and there is a crucial complexity driving them to "express" themselves. (and I would add here that this will not be the last time that such inner drivers will accost those of us as we weather the winds of change and aging in our own lives.) Whether through tattos, hairdos/colors that cause you to look twice or "outrageous" dressing/dancing...or the many ways in which the "new generation ... I'm another friend of Kate's. I take offense to a lot of what's on this board. How can you use the death of a young woman you've never met, a tragedy that you have read about in a newspaper clipping, to legitimize your tirades against body piercing? Of course, it is easy to read that someone has died and conclude that the speculated cause of death is objectively bad. What lilme33 iterated quite courageously in her posts is that by exploiting this painful loss to fuel your moralistic claims, you're needlessly tormenting the people Kate has left behind, people who are already going through hell right now. Yes, body piercing can be construed as a form of masochism; so can almost anything. ... It's nobodies business but Kate's as to what she did with or to herself for good or ill all my prayers go out to her survivors. wife and kids agree too- we're deeply sorrowed by your loss- way too young for any reason. exactly dewy...thanks No one is exploiting the woman's death, and the only ones moralizing now are you. It is not unjust to warn others of the problems that can occur and the fact that it is a high risk behavior that is based upon self affliction. Those are pure facts, you just don't like the way it sounds or the implications about the wisdom of it all. Some people here also might even be in the business and are writing to defend the profits they make. Frankly the piercing and tatoo business is outrageously expensive for the customer-victim from which the traders in this practice make a boat load of money. The fact that sociologically it has become 'cool" is the means by which these profiteers prey on thos... |
