ratilfar says: However, if the creator manages to pull off a hit, the dynamic changes. He eventually becomes marketable on star power alone. Whatever he produces is guaranteed to sell, regardless of quality, thanks to his established fanbase. Not all creators actually appreciate the help they've received from the editors. As far as they're concerned, these short-sighted editors have been holding them back from true greatness. They might not actively think this, but getting a fanbase and thus lots of positive feedback gives some people a swelled head. I read a book by Piers Anthony once, "But what of Earth", but the entire book was published based on the changes made by editors. It was a simple disaster story, as I recall, but the changes made by the editors completely altered the aim of the story, the plot, and the characters. After winning a suit against the company for the changes they made and the publishing they did (without his consent) he rewrote the book with the editor notes intact separating the edits based on the color of the pen/pencil being used. He explained then how their changes completely corrupted the story and how completely ignorant they were... True, but I guess that means the editors were good for something. |
