the tight logic of "you just can't do that" really failed to convince me of the "kookiness" of this stunt. Theres a lot of currencies out there, every entity that accepts your IOU, offers you credit points that can be redeemed or enables you to go into debt to them, may as well be offering a currency. microfinance technologies will bring it right to your mouse pointer.

Under the Constitution ( Article I, section 8, clause 5 ), Congress has the exclusive power to coin money of the United States and to regulate its value. By statute ( 31 U.S.C. § 5112(a) ), Congress specifies the coins that the Secretary of the Treasury is authorized to mint and issue and requires the Secretary to carry out these duties at the United States Mint (31 U.S.C. § 5131). Accordingly, the United States Mint is the only entity in the United States with the lawful authority to mint and issue legal tender United States coins. Under 18 U.S.C. § 486, it is a Federal crime to utter or pass, or attempt to utter or pass, any coins of gold or silver intended for use as current money except as authorized by law.

The logic of this legislation is, I suspect, to outlaw production of counterfeit US dollars, rather than alternative forms of currency. It seems profoundly unfair and immoral if the person next door prints dollars when I have to work hard for mine. The currency in question is not US dollars, it is a measure of metal isn't it. What I can work out, the protest is about the perception of value, whether the US government can be trusted, whether its possible for US citizens to avoid going down with the economy.
The information age has let currencies multiply, numismatics (coin collecting) is not illegal, nor is production of medals and trading in same. Anything that functions as a unit of accou...

Please, learn about the monetary system before you go calling people nuts, our federal gov't is now printing nothing but paper with nothing to back it up, Bartendingbear did a great clip called " Liberty Dollars - Legal Private Currency" it sums it up pretty well, if you care to learn a thing or two, http://www.apfn.org/apfn/reserve.htm http://www.apfn.org/apfn/money2.htm
Paul dollars are no more illegitimate than http://www.franklinmint.com/subcategory.aspx?sid=2&category_id=252 what they did was unconstitutional in seizing them and conducting a raid. Or just go on with your complacency while the rights of citizens are trampled...

n2sooners, I certainly agree that Ron Paul supporters are nuts. However, what does Article I, section 8, clause 5 have to do with this case?
These coins do not have "legal tender" printed on them. It seems to me that if these coins were traded for goods it would fall under the legal parameters of barter.
